What Is a Root Canal?

Root canal therapy is a procedure that cleans out an infection or addresses other concerns with the root of your tooth. Typically, a root canal is diagnosed either by x-ray or because you have been experiencing pain, swelling, or sensitivity. It is important to note that not all tooth sensitivity or pain requires a root canal to treat.

What Are the Symptoms That Indicate a Root Canal?

  • Pain or tenderness
  • Swelling of the gums
  • A pimple-like eruption on your gums
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold

Root canal pain can range from mild to extreme. The sooner you call for treatment, the better. That way we can get you comfortable faster, and you can return to your normal routine.

How Are Root Canals Performed?

A root canal procedure begins with Dr. Forte making you numb so that you will be completely comfortable for your appointment. Then, once you are numb, a tiny hole is placed in your tooth to gain access to the root. Using precision instruments, the infection is cleaned out of the root of your tooth. Medication may be placed inside the canal to prevent further infection or to promote healing. Once your root canal is complete, your tooth will be sealed to keep out food and debris. If necessary, a crown may also be placed over the tooth for additional protection and support.
