What Is a Crown?

A dental crown is a protective cover placed over your natural tooth to provide extra support and stability to the tooth. Dental crowns generally come in metal, all-porcelain, or a combination.

The type of crown you will require depends on your specific dental needs and wants. Each crown is custom made to fit with your other teeth and to provide a stable chewing surface. All-porcelain crowns look the most natural and can be beneficial for teeth that will be visible while you are smiling or talking.

When Do I Need a Crown?

  • You have a cracked tooth.
  • You have a broken tooth.
  • You have had a root canal.
  • You have lost a large filling.
  • You need to replace dark fillings that are breaking down.
  • You need to replace old crowns that are leaking.
  • The structure of your tooth is compromised.

Crowns provide stability and support to teeth that are in a weakened state from cracks, decay, or from a root canal. Crowns can prolong the life of your tooth and prevent painful splitting or breaking. They allow you to eat, brush, and floss normally.

What Is Involved In Getting a Crown?

First, if decay exists, Dr. Forte will gently remove the decay from your tooth. He may need to place a large filling to build up the remaining structure of your tooth. Then, we will make a temporary crown for you until the permanent one is ready.

Once we have a permanent crown, we will place it over your tooth to protect it. Dr. Forte will make any necessary adjustments to your crown to make sure that it fits perfectly with your other teeth so that it is comfortable.
